We've all heard the saying, "as bad as a root canal." Root canals have a bad reputation for being painful, but the whole point is to get rid of the source of the pain you're already experience. Think of a root canal as nothing more than a way to save a tooth by removing the problem inside. The inflamed or infected pulp inside the tooth is removed, the area is cleansed of infection, and then everything is closed back up and replaced with synthetic, rubber-like material for stability and restored with a crown or filling for protection. What causes the inflammation/infection to need a root canal?
Inflammation or infection can have several causes, including deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, old leaky crowns, or trauma to the tooth (even if there is no visible damage). When should I be concerned? If there is damage to the nerve inside your tooth, you'll be able to feel it when consuming hot or cold foods and beverages, or when you bite down in general. If you do happen to be experiencing any pain, you should set up a consultation at our office. What to expect during treatment: Root canal treatment typically takes just one or two appointments depending on the condition of your tooth. We make sure you are comfortable throughout your treatment and offer oral or IV sedation for those with severe dental anxiety. If left untreated: Inflammation or infection can lead to severe pain and even an abscess (accumulation of pus) inside the bone, tooth, and gums. If left untreated for too long, your tooth can be damaged beyond repair and can create a large defect in the bone. As the infection worsens, it could lead to severe swelling and possible hospitalization. As long as we can catch problems early on, there will be no need for a root canal at all! Why is it important to hold onto your natural teeth? Saving your natural tooth will keep you from missing out on the foods you love, will help protect your other teeth from wear, and will allow you to maintain your natural appearance without the expense of additional dental work.
