A bridge is a fixed dental restoration that is used to “bridge” the gap left from one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge includes one or more artificial teeth and is anchored to existing teeth or dental implants.
What will happen if I don't get treatment?
Teeth Shift – When left untreated, the space created from missing teeth give your other teeth room to shift. This shifting can cause teeth to become crowded/crooked and create a misaligned bite.
Bite, Decay & Gum Issues – As teeth shift and your bite changes, you may experience headaches, jaw pain, and wear on teeth that no longer have the proper contact points. This shifting and wear on your teeth can result in decay and gum disease.
Problems Chewing – Missing teeth and misalignment often causes problems chewing, making it difficult to enjoy the foods you love and sometimes restricting your diet and health to softer foods. Changes in Your Appearance – Aside from the obvious gap left from a missing tooth, the jawbone can also adapt to the amount of space needed for your teeth, thus shrinking the size of your jaw. Bone loss can change your appearance, cause a “caved in” look, and often makes a person look older than they are.
Further Tooth Loss – When the tooth opposite your missing tooth has nothing to bite against, it can super erupt. During typical tooth eruption, the bones in our mouth push on teeth until they meet opposition from other teeth. Super eruption happens when there is no opposite tooth and a tooth erupts too far, requiring additional treatment to avoid losing the tooth.
More Time & Expense – Any resulting treatment from teeth shifting (fillings, bite corrections, gum disease treatment, etc.), often results in more time and expense than the investment in your bridge.
