What are Frenectomies?

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the frenum, a thin rope-like piece of tissue in the mouth that connects the lips, cheeks or tongue to the bone of the mouth.

What will happen if I don’t get treatment?

Gum Recession or Teeth Misalignment - A lip tie, which is a tight frenulum between the lip and gums, may cause the teeth to be pulled outward, contributing to gaps between teeth or gum recession. If left untreated, this can lead to more serious dental alignment issues, bone loss, and teeth loss.

Increased Sensitivity - Gum recession exposes the tooth roots, which are more sensitive than the enamel-covered part of the tooth. Root exposure can result in increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or touch.

Difficulty with Speech - If you have a tongue tie, not getting a frenectomy could result in persistent speech difficulties, such as trouble pronouncing certain sounds or slurring words. This is especially common in children, but it can affect adults as well.

Impact on Bite and Jaw Function - A restricted frenum, particularly the tongue tie, can affect how the teeth come together (the bite) and how the jaw moves. Over time, this can cause jaw pain, discomfort, and even temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.
