What is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp (or soft tissue) inside your tooth gets inflamed or infected. Inflammation or infection can have several causes, including deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, old leaky crowns, or trauma to the tooth (even when there is no visible damage). The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting it, and then filling and sealing it.

What will happen if I don't get treatment?

Abscess - When left untreated, inflammation or infection can lead to increased pain and even an abscess (accumulation of pus) inside the bone, tooth, and gums.

Pain & Swelling - As the infection worsens, it can lead to severe pain and swelling, making it extremely difficult to chew.

Tooth Loss - If left untreated for too long, your tooth can be damaged beyond repair, causing you to lose your tooth and possibly creating a large defect in the bone. If your lost tooth is not replaced, you could lose surrounding teeth over time.

Permanent Tooth Discoloration – Once the root of your tooth dies, it turns a dark brown. If a root canal isn’t done timely enough, the material of the dead root permeates the dentin surrounding it, causing permanent discoloration of the tooth.

More Time & Expense – As your condition worsens, your treatment becomes more extensive and more costly.

Serious Health Issues – Your infection can cause life threatening conditions such as sepsis, cellulitis, bacterial endocarditis, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, and in extreme situations, even death. Active infections also worsen existing health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and respiratory diseases, and can cause low birth rates among pregnant women.
