Fillings are used to restore a tooth that has decay. A filling is placed after the decay is removed and the affected area is cleaned. A filling material is then used to restore your tooth to its normal shape and function. The filling closes off the damaged area of the tooth to keep bacteria from entering through the tooth's surface, which prevents future cavities and decay.
